Ozempic · Wegovy · GLP-1 receptor agonist
Semaglutide
Label FDA-approved
What it is
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist with a C18 fatty-acid chain that extends half-life to weekly injection. Approved products exist for type 2 diabetes and chronic weight management. Research-chemical vials are not those branded pens.
Benefits in plain language
What researchers and reference users usually mean when they talk about this compound. These are study themes and common claims — not a promise that it will do this in you.
- Weekly GLP-1 drug (Ozempic / Wegovy / Rybelsus). The one most people have actually heard of.
- You get full faster, think about food less, and blood sugar handling usually improves on the approved products.
- Weight change can be large. Muscle and nutrient intake need attention so the loss is not all useful tissue.
- Stomach side effects during titration are expected, not a rare surprise.
If a branded, FDA-approved product exists, that label is the only dose that is actually authorized. Research-chemical vials are a different object.
Mechanism of action
GLP-1 receptor activation increases glucose-dependent insulin secretion, slows gastric emptying, and reduces appetite via central and peripheral incretin pathways.
Possible side effects / caveats
GI effects (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation) dominate, especially during titration. Class warnings include pancreatitis language, gallbladder disease, and a boxed warning on rodent thyroid C-cell tumors. Hypoglycemia risk rises with insulin or sulfonylureas.
